If you had Newton-lift that Bernoulli couldn't account for, you'd have a force that magically jumps from the air to the wing without involving any pressure at the air-wing interface, and that's impossible. If you had Bernoulli-lift that Newton couldn't account for, you'd basically have the air exerting a force on the wing and the wing either not exerting a force back on the air, or the air not deflecting in response to that force. You can't get more Bernoulli-lift without also getting more Newton-lift, because at the end of the day, it's all the same lift. If you tweak the flow pattern to change the flow speed and surface pressure, you also change the flow direction and rate of change of flow direction. (And neither Bernoulli or Newton answers the really interesting question, which is why an airfoil generates the airflow pattern that it does.)īernoulli describes the the flow speed and surface pressure (energy), newton deals with flow direction and the rate of change in the flow direction (momentum).īut those are linked. Bernoulli and Newton aren't really sources of lift, so much as they are both tools in the aerodynamics problem-solving toolbox. liftĪnd I'll get the same answer both ways.
